The area of the Tama region spreading from around Hachioji to Ome became rich in textile production from the Meiji and Taisho periods, forming the main industry of the region. Around 1950, factories producing such things airplanes, communications equipment, and measuring devices moved from urban regions or were newly established in Tama, marking the foundation of the machine industry in the region.
Later the region experienced considerable growth with the influence of the Act Concerning the Industry Restriction in the Built-up Area of the National Capital Region, and movement from central Tokyo and the Keihin industrial region. The municipalities across Tama worked together to develop industrial districts, contributing to incentive for factories and allowing the machine industry that went on to create many new factories in the area to take root.
